In 2007, during an international ORL-HNS meeting held in the Philippines, a group of audiologists, otolaryngologists, educators, and allied medical science practitioners noted the growing need for professional audiological services in the Asia Oceania region brought on by changes in the global environment.

The group decided to form an association that will establish itself as a strong and effective professional network for the exchange of ideas and new technologies in the region, including the promotion of research and cooperation among member countries.

They named the association Asia Oceania Association of Audiology.

ORL-HNS associations and audiological societies from Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand posted their interest in the new association, and sent representatives to its first organizational meeting.
